Many of the hills and cliffs of the Pacific Northwest are not of rock but of sand, gravel, clay or some mixture or layering of these. This is a result of ice ages. Some of these formations display some interesting patterns. The cliffs are all constantly eroding, and sometimes collapse catastrophically.
