In this lava bed, the Modoc leader Kientpoos (Captain Jack) took advantage of the rough terrain to hold off a much larger force of the US Army for several months of 1872. It is now part of the Lava Beds National Monument in the far north of California.

The area has many collapsed lava caves and has examples of both a'a and pahoehoe lavas.
